Guilty

Who's to blame in this story?
Is there someone to blame?
Recently, in discussions we've talked about who's fault is it for Minette being bullied...
Is it Minette's behavior?
Could it be Genna's fault? Does she know more than she says?
Or can you even blame anyone?

Do you guys think Genna knows anything about Minette's death, and if she did would she tell some one?
Could Genna be ignoring what is happening to Minitte.

This is getting too long, but:

in this passage, ""Strange, the dining hall without Minette Swift!...I was free, when I entered the dining hall, to sit at any table I wished." (202)
Do you think Genna felt relieved?

I think that there is always a reason to blame someone if you look at it in different views. The book is written in first person, but I feel as though Genna is hiding something because why did she lie about hearing Minette walking around that night and about her being "free"? I also noticed the line that you point out about the lunch room, it contradicted everything that Genna says. I think that Genna is trapped in what her Dad believes, and not what she really believes deep down inside.

THE BLAME:
-Minette's behavior can be a factor in why she is getting bullied (since she kind of bullied everyone else, like Genna)
-Genna can also be at fault since she tries to hide that evidence of racism that is directed toward Minette.
-The society can be at fault - at that time, the U.S. is fresh from the Civil Rights Movement, it has only been 5 years since the U.S. emerged as a new nation "without" segregation and not everyone was happy. There were still some hatred and discrimination toward a color person which adds and gives a reason to make offended remarks to Minette.

I don't think Genna knew about Minette's death because on page 228, she said "Unknowingly, I would be the last person to see Minette Swift alive." If Genna did know, she would tell someone because this is someone's life she's dealing with, it's bigger than a racist picture or comment. Genna cannot be ignoring what is happening to Minette since when Minette had the flu, she tried her best to help Minette and talked to Minette's family to reassure them. It would be a surprise if Genna is actually ignoring what is happening to Minette but you never know, like I said, I feel as though this is written in omitted first-person (if there is such thing)

In situations like this there is always someone to blame and everyone can be blamed. Genna could be blamed if she knew something but did not say anything. Minette can be blamed because she was so cold to everyone. To place the fault for her being bullied can also be put on all for the same reasons for the blame of her death. I think Genna has an idea about what happened with Minette’s death, but I am not sure if she will tell anyone. Genna could be ignoring what happened to Minette and she seemed to be ignoring it while Minette was still living. It seems like Genna is relieved I think she felt like she almost had to protect Minette. After she died she did feel relieved that she did not need to watch out for her and she did not need to in a way protect her.
