Friends

Before reading this novel have you ever read any books on discrimination and what were the cases did they come to death like in Minette's case? Those books are more common than a white and a black befriending each other. Also would you consider Minette and Genna to be friends?

I actually did read a book, and "un"surprisingly, it is also named Black and White by Paul Volponi. It is about two high school students who are both boys and they are best friends and both are basketball stars at their school. They made a mistake and try to rob someone. In the end, their friendship ended due to the influence of society (the white guy went to a good college with a basketball scholarship, and the black guy got sent to jail). No one died in the book but I guess something did die, their friendship.

Marissa-I think it's me, but I don't understand some part of your question so I'll just answer them the best that I can.

I believe that Genna and Minette are in a type of relationship, but I don't think that they are exactly friends. For one, Minette doesn't want to be friends with anyone, not with the attitude that she has. I would give her the benefit of the doubt but from Genna's point of view, Minette has no respect for anyone at the school.

This book is very controversial. One would argue that the events that are happening to Minette is due to racism. But, the origin of it all is not her race, it's her attitude. Her race just intensify it all. Also, the school tried be nice to her because she was bullied but she showed no respect. She trashed the historical house that she is staying at. The people gave extensions for her tests and stuff, but she is still rude. I thought this book is about racism, but from my point of view, it's far from racism but the act of individuals driven by racism and its history (if that make any sense).

P.S.: sorry, this is a long response

Uhm, I don't think i've ever read a book on discrimination where it lead to death... but i've read books that have dealt with discrimination.

I think in a way, Minette andGenna are friends. They aren't your typical friends, but friendship can be seen in different ways. Genna is the only one that Minette invites anywhere, like the bookstore. Genna is the only one that knew about Minette's boyfriend, Minentte is the only one that Genna got a christmas gift for, and although neither them would admit it, they depend on each other. They might necessarily have a tight, or the greatest friendship, but they are friends.
